[Other] Line

1. Draw the line
It's hard to keep teenagers under control, but you have to draw the line. 青少年很難控制,但你還是得設定一個界線。

2. What line of work are you in? 

其實是:你做什麼的?
line這個字有行業種類的意思,line of work 就是 field of work(行業別),當別人問 "What line of work are you in?" 你可以直接回答 "I'm a software engineer."
They are my partners in my line of work. 他們是我業界的夥伴。

3. Drop a line 發個短訊(郵件或email)

line通常只英文句子看來像條線,drop a line用在表非正式書寫或傳個簡短訊息給別人 。
We really like to hear from you. Drop us a line and let us know how you are. 我們真的很了解你的近況,留個訊息給我們,好讓我們知道你過的怎樣。

4. Bottom line (淨利;底線;重點)

Bottom line在財報的意思就是淨利,因為損益表最下面一行就是盈餘數字故有此名,後來也表示最後的底線、不能再讓步的原則。
Will the rise in interest rates affect our bottom line? 利率上升會影響我們的淨利嗎?
My bottom line on this job is 50,000 and not less than it. 我對這分工作薪資設限是50,000,不能少於這個數字。

5. A fine/thin line 一線之隔(而兩者差距極大)

用在比喻兩個事物看似相像但意義卻天差地別的情況。
There is a thin line between guilty and shame.
(心虛跟羞愧差異不大,可是落差很大。)
